The historic gardens at Kingston Bagpuize House play host to a Rare Plant Fair on Sunday, May 24th, in support of two local charities.

This 18th century house is in a unique setting on the edge of The White Horse Vale and surrounded by its beautiful garden and parkland.

The area of garden to the immediate east and north of the house was formal in layout and today this remains the case. The lawns once graced by majestic trees are now largely open; the vista from the east, looking up the beech avenue towards the house, framed by the four Wellingtonias planted around 1860, confirm the importance of this historic house both within and beyond its immediate landscape. The long mixed border immediately north of the house is planted with roses a wide range of perennial and herbaceous plants and in spring snowdrops and tulips. At the far end, a large Magnolia soulangeana makes a dramatic backdrop when in bloom in late spring. Passing the ornamental gate choice climbers are planted against the south facing wall of the Terrace.

Beyond the small ornamental gate steps led up to the terrace border. This has been planted over the last 20 years as a dry garden with drought tolerant plants giving interest and colour through the seasons. At the end of the terrace is the Pavilion which offers lovely views over the garden.

All our events are held in beautiful and prestigious gardens, each with its own unique character, from those with histories stretching back centuries to more modern gardens created in recent years. A day out at one of our fairs a really enjoyable and inspiring experience for everyone, whether a novice or experienced gardener.

The nurseries that attend our Fairs are carefully selected to ensure that they are genuine growers who produce most or all of the plants that they sell themselves. We try offer the widest possible range of plants to our visitors, including perennials, shrubs and trees, alpines, bulbs and exotic plants, and all of our nursery owners are experts in the plants that they grow. They are all always happy to offer all the advice that you need to select and grow the right plants for your garden.

The fair will be open from 11am to 4pm, and entry to the fair and garden costs just £6 for adults and £4 for children over the age of 11. Kingston Bagpuize House itself will also be open from 1pm-4pm (additional fee payable). Refreshments are available. A proportion of the proceeds will be donated to two local charities: SeeSaw, a charity that supplies grief support for the young in Oxfordshire, and Riding for the Disabled (Abingdon Branch), who offer therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities through activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting, and show jumping.
