Sandymere dates back to the 1920s, but the current garden has been developed over the last 30 years, since Sir John Timpson and his late wife Alex bought the house in April 1987. They were greeted by a spectacular display of azaleas and rhododendrons, but by the end of May the colour had gone and the garden gave little colour or excitement for them the rest of the summer.

A plan was created by landscape architect Mark Darwent, which has evolved well beyond the planned 10 year programme and extended much further than the original three acres. Today it is a collection of individual gardens providing a mystery tour that finds surprises around every corner. Our group today will be guided by Head Gardener Rachel Pemberton and Gardener Susan Murray.

Highlights include a substantial hosta garden (over 13,000) by a waterfall, which connects the rill that runs by the house to the front lake with its imposing boat house. The top lake is always home to plenty of ducks (lots of different breeds amongst the army of mallards).

Get your timing right and you will catch a blaze of colour from the azaleas and the wild flower garden against the backdrop of some magnificent mature trees. Maintained to a high standard by Rachel and her team of 6 gardeners, Sandymere is an exceptional private garden rarely seen by the public.
