Set amongst the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, this unique 60-acre, private garden set within a woodland contains a large and notable collection of plants ranging from unusual trees and shrubs, to a wide range of selected lilies and other bulbs.
The garden’s unusual band of acid soil, in this otherwise predominantly alkaline area, provides the opportunity to cultivate plants such as rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, which would not ordinarily thrive in this location. From the emergence of the first snowdrops, right through to its wonderful autumn hues, there’s something for all to see throughout the seasons in Evenley Wood Garden. An extensive network of paths leads you through this remarkable garden with the opportunity for hours of exploration.
Carpets of named snowdrops run into wonderful spring bulbs and the garden’s 800m long Scilla ‘stream’ as the garden jumps into life. Some 150 magnolias follow and are later joined by the first flush of new leaves, rhododendrons and azaleas.
Collections of particular note in the garden include oak, pear, apple, maple and what is possibly the largest collection of euonymus in Europe. These sit alongside hardy bulb collections including lilies, spanning all hybrid types, scillas and snowdrops.
Now in their 24th season, Rare Plant Fairs are held in beautiful and prestigious gardens, each with its own unique character, from those with histories stretching back centuries to more modern gardens created in recent years. A day out at one of our fairs a really enjoyable and inspiring experience for everyone, whether a novice or experienced gardener. The nurseries that attend our Fairs are carefully selected to ensure that they are genuine growers who produce most or all of the plants that they sell themselves. We try offer the widest possible range of plants to our visitors, including perennials, shrubs and trees, alpines, bulbs and exotic plants, and all of our nursery owners are experts in the plants that they grow. They are all always happy to offer all the advice that you need to select and grow the right plants for your garden.
The fair will be open from 11am to 4pm, and adult entry, which includes entry to both the fair and garden costs just £5, children under 16 £1. Refreshments are available. Well-controlled dogs on short leads are allowed in the Gardens and Fair. Full details, including a list of the nurseries attending the event, can be found at www.rareplantfair.co.uk
