Join us for a tour of the Reed Business School gardens at Little Compton Manor, recorded in the Domesday book, together with its deer park – the smallest in the country.
The architecture of Arts and Crafts garden rooms allows for a variety of planting styles and design themes, most notably the Flower Garden and Palette (long border). Shelter belts of specimen trees allow the large site to have an enclosed and intimate feel.
Our guide, Head Gardener Richard Sutton, joined the team in 2015 to complete a team of four full time gardeners. Visitors are often surprised both by how extensive the garden is, and how the garden reveals itself in a serious of pleasant little surprises.
After lunch at a nearby eatery we will make the short journey to our second garden of the day, Mill Dene Garden, a hidden gem and place of beauty, tranquillity and rest.
The stream behind the house has an air of mystery with a misty grotto and shade plants. The herb potager has the village church as a backdrop and there are views over the hills to the Salt Way. The gentle sounds of water in rills and basins abound, as does scent, particularly along the Rose Walk.
The feel of the garden is light-hearted with the use of mirrors, trompe l’oeil, concealment and surprise apparently altering the boundaries and size of the garden. After gardening here for 45 years, Wendy is now adapting the garden to be more easily managed.
As seen on ITV’s ‘Love your Garden’, BBC’s Countryfile, and on the Sunday Telegraph list of Ten Best Herb Gardens in England.
